Nozick and Searle

I have been reading Nozick's "Philosophical Explanations" and Searle's "Mind" recently. Searle's claim that mind body vocabulary may lead us astray is interesting, and I'd like to know more about how he proposes understanding consciessness as a different level of description. I need to find out what research has been done on level's of description, as I wonder how close it is connected with types.

Nozick jumps around subjects for a while, and seems to like his "chain" mechanisms. His discussion style is inviting, and comments on reading tendencies of philosophers. This is discussed in his introduction. The tangents where he starts talking about tantric meditation are funny to me. He goes from a discussion of the principle of sufficient reason, to natural laws, and eventually ponders about tantric meditation. These ponderings are outliers to an otherwise serious and well developed book, but they help break from a knowing narrative voice, reminding us that he is another person with interests organizing and expressing his thoughts in a book, and I think ultimately it reminds us that his theories are meant to be analyzed, and that he isn't trying to present just what he thinks is the truth.

Hopefully, more to come
